Blogger Tip - Adding a Menu Bar

As a business owner, wife and mother to 2, I don't have much free time but when I do, it's usually spent on the computer learning new things. One of those new things that I had recently learned was blog design. For awhile I had been doing it for free and one question I would frequently get asked when beginning a design was "Can you add a menu bar to my blog?". My answer, "yes".

Since I am no longer doing blog design, I want to share this little tutorial on how to add a menu bar (and a few additional widgets - or gadgets they're now called) to your Blogger layout. If you want your layout to look like the image below (circled items are the ones that will be added to your existing layout), follow these easy steps.

Login into your Blogger account.

Click on the Layout tab.

Click on Edit HTML

Press Ctrl+F to open up the "Find" box

Type showaddelement (all one word)

You will see something like this:

Everywhere that it says 'no', you are going to change to 'yes'.

**ONLY WHERE IT FOLLOWS showaddelement. There should be about 3 places that you are going to change it from 'no' to 'yes'. You will probably have to scroll down a tiny bit to change all of them.

Click Save Template

You are done! You are now able to add a widget above your blog posts, under your blog heading (or above it).

If you benefited from this tutorial, just leave me a comment. :)

  3. Hi! You stopped by my blog and commented on WW and Beth Moore, so I had to come check you out! First off....thanks for stopping by....I have 5 blogs of yours to check out before I leave, huh ;-) I do love the tip, but I have trouble following directions like this. When I changed my blog header, she had to sign in and do it for me. But, I am saving this tip so I can really read it and maybe give it a try. Blogging is something I am learning as I go along....just jumped in and made lots of mistakes. I appreciate folks like you willing to share from your experience!

  19. To Sarah Holland - The widget you should use is Add HTML. You will need to create the actual buttons in a photo editing program of some kind - I use Paint Shop Pro. Then you would upload them to a site like photobucket.com to get the html code. Does that make sense?

  26. Thank you so much. I just took notes an dI will work on this. I have been searching for about 6 weeks and one of my followers told me about you. I am also a Christian and love to help other gals out. Will this work if you want to add a button down one of my panels ? For instance if I wanted to have a button that said projects, where people could click that button and then go to a list.

Also, I have a 3 panel design that I did myself but I would like to have my main blog to the far left and the 2 small side panels both on the right-how would I do this?

The third thing I would like to do-whenever I get advertisers-is have a panel like Kimba at A Soft Place to land has at the top of her blog and then her two panels are under that.
